Book Review: Dirty Laundry by Richard Pink and Roxanne Emery
After discovering my ADHD "superpowers" later in life, like many millennials, I immediately jumped online to learn more about others' experiences with late diagnoses. To my surprise, I found there wasn’t much out there. Why is that? Dirty Laundry by Richard Pink and Roxanne Emery tackles this head-on, explaining how shame keeps so many of us quiet.
I had already been introduced to the concepts of shame and vulnerability through Brene Brown’s talks and books (which, by the way, if you haven’t listened to her TED Talks, do yourself a favor and watch them). It’s no wonder shame has stopped so many of us from asking for help. I mean, how do you even ask for help with something you didn’t know you had?
I stumbled upon a podcast where Richard and Roxanne talked about their experiences with ADHD, and it was like a lightbulb went off: I wasn’t alone! I immediately looked up their book and started reading. Dirty Laundry quickly became my ADHD user manual. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve learned more about myself from this book (and their talks) than I ever expected to.
The way they break down ADHD, especially in relationships, is incredible. It’s like a guide for both you and your partner on how to “operate” you, the ADHDer. Their insights are practical and relatable, offering strategies and examples that hit close to home. What’s more, their YouTube channel is full of helpful videos. I’ve found their content to be so valuable—it really drives home the point that we’re not as alone as we think.
Before I found this book, I thought I was unique in my struggles. Turns out, I’m far from alone. There are so many of us out there, learning to navigate the challenges and embrace the quirks that come with ADHD. Dirty Laundry makes it clear that there’s no need to feel isolated or ashamed.
If you’ve been diagnosed with ADHD later in life or if you are trying to support someone who has, I can’t recommend this book enough. It’s an essential resource for understanding yourself and connecting with others who share the same journey.
Also, dont worry if your partner isn’t interested in reading it, read it yourself—multiple times if you need to! You’ll figure it out. This book is packed with so much wisdom and understanding, that it’s worth going through again and again. I’ve learned something new each time.
